Site 41 Draft Design Approval
July 12th 2006 Dunlop: McGuinty Liberals
Hatred of Rural Ontario Families Continues
Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop to-day questioned
the decision by the McGuinty Liberals to issue
a draft design approval to the County of Simcoe
for the proposed Site 41 landfill. The draft design
approval was issued on Monday, July 10, shortly
after the provincial legislature adjourned for
the summer recess.
“In light of the fact that the McGuinty
Liberals will be holding committee hearings this
summer on the Ontario Clean Water Act and will
be asking the agricultural community to abide
by expensive and intrusive new guidelines, I find
it unbelievable that the McGuinty Liberals would
proceed to the last stage of placing a landfill
on top of one of the most pristine aquifers in
the world”, said Dunlop. “Clearly,
Dalton McGuinty has learned nothing from Walkerton
or he would have listened to the citizens of North
Simcoe who do not want a landfill placed within
4 KM of the municipal water systems of Elmvale
and Wyevale.”
Despite the fact that the government has received
thousands of anti-land fill signatures on petitions,
hundreds of letters of protests, a request to
the Environmental Commission of Ontario to review
the application, and has a Private Members Bill
39 (An Act to Prevent the Disposal of Waste at
Site 41 in the Township of Tiny) before the House,
the McGuinty Liberals have ignored everyone and
are proceeding in a direction that does not guarantee
that the new landfill will not contaminate the
water source.
“It was easy for McGuinty to reverse the
approval application for the Adams Mine Landfill
when Liberal MPP and Cabinet Minister David Ramsay
threatened to resign his seat, but he is set to
proceed with a “dinosaur” landfill
at Site 41 in a riding held by a Tory,”
added Dunlop. “This Premier should be ashamed
of himself for his partisan action and for his
hatred of rural Ontario families.”
Dunlop also pointed out that the announcement
came when the house was in recess and McGuinty
cannot be questioned on his promise to help protect
Ontario’s prime farmland and water sources.
