DUNLOP: MINISTER KWINTER’S ANGER IS NOT ENOUGH
For Immediate Release
November 18, 2003 (Queen’s Park) –
Garfield Dunlop, P.C. Critic for Community Safety
and Correctional Services, said today that Minister
Kwinter’s sole response of anger over a
man mistakenly released from the Niagara Detention
Centre lacks substance and leadership.
“Ontarians expect leadership on this issue,
not finger-pointing at police and corrections
officers,” said Dunlop. “The Minister
should redirect his anger at his own former Corrections
Critic and Ontario’s former Opposition Leader
who consistently opposed innovative ideas to improve
our corrections system.”
Dunlop also noted that The Ontario Liberal Plan
for Clean, Safe Communities that Work does not
even mention the word “jail” or any
plans whatsoever for the rehabilitation of Ontario’s
adult offenders.
“Improving correctional facilities and
rehab programs for adult inmates is obviously
not a priority for the new Liberal government,”
commented Dunlop. “When it comes to law
and order, the Liberals have a secret agenda that
includes closing down efficient and effective
correctional facilities like Project Turnaround
and deprivatizing the Central North Correctional
Centre.”
