DUNLOP DISAPPOINTED WITH
THRONE SPEECH: NOTHING FOR
POLICE OR FIREFIGHTERS
November 20, 2003
(Queen’s Park) – Community Safety
and Correctional Services Critic Garfield Dunlop
today expressed his disappointment with how police
and firefighters were totally ignored in today’s
Throne Speech.
“The speech was read in the presence of
Toronto’s Police Chief and a representative
of the Police Association of Ontario, but the
word “police” was not even mentioned
once,” said Dunlop. “During the election,
the Liberals – among other things –
promised to put 1,000 new police officers on the
street. Where’s their commitment to safety
in our communities?”
Dunlop also noted that the Throne Speech is silent
on plans to equip firefighters with new safety
technology, yet another election promise.
“Police and firefighters across Ontario
should be very concerned when they are left out
of a Throne Speech,” said Dunlop. “When
it comes to law and order, the Liberals’
message is loud and clear: it’s not a priority.”
