MPP DUNLOP – SNEAKY
AND SECRETIVE APPROVALS FOR
SITE 41 AND GREEN LANE
October 2nd 2006 (Toronto, ON) – The
following is a statement made by Simcoe North
MPP, Garfield Dunlop in the legislature on October
2, 2006. The statement is regarding the manner
in which the McGuinty Liberals approved the expansion
of the Green Lane landfill in St. Thomas and the
draft design approval for Site 41 in the Township
of Tiny.
Garfield Dunlop (Simcoe North):
I understand the Premier is embarking on his
“Thank you for putting up with my broken
promises tour”. Yes this is a man that will
say and do anything to get elected.
As you are well aware the Green Lane Landfill
is about to receive the garbage of the city of
Toronto with the blessing of Minister Peters,
Minister Bentley, MPPs Ramal, Matthews, VanBommel
and of course the Premier who is prepared to sacrifice
the London area ridings.
What is truly interesting, Mr. Speaker is the
manner in which the Green Lane Landfill received
approval to expand. Immediately after the House
adjourned for summer recess last June - Green
Lane received approval for a huge expansion. A
few days later, The Site 41 proposed landfill
in the Township of Tiny also received draft design
approval.
Wouldn’t you think that a Premier who talks
about transparency would have had the courage
not to hide behind the summer recess? In a sneaky,
secretive manner both Site 41 and Green Lane received
approvals – obviously with the intention
that any negative publicity would be covered up
by summer activities. At a time when Ontarians
expect their Premier to protect their valuable
water sources, Dalton McGuinty and former St.
Thomas Mayor Steve Peters are finding sneaky ways
to approve landfills that sit upon some of the
most pristine water on our planet, like the water
below Site 41.
To make matters even worse, the Liberals held
committee hearings on the Ontario Clean Water
Act, thinking they can fool other Ontarians.
Dalton McGuinty will say anything and do anything
to get elected. I wonder if he will take his “Thank
you for putting up with my broken promises tour”
to Site 41 and Green Lane.
Thank you very much Mr. Speaker.
