DUNLOP PLEASED WITH OUTCOME
OF JAIL’S RATIFICATION VOTE
For Immediate Release
March 12, 2004 (Orillia) – Simcoe North
MPP Garfield Dunlop, who is also PC Critic for
Community Safety and Correctional Services, said
today that he is pleased that Management Training
Corporation Canada (MTCC) and the Ontario Public
Service Employees Union (OPSEU) have reached a
contract agreement for correctional officers at
the Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC) in
Penetanguishene.
The agreement was ratified last night when an
overwhelming 84 percent of employees voted in
favour of the offer. Turnout for the ratification
vote exceeded 90 percent.
“I congratulate the negotiating teams from
OPSEU and MTCC for working together to come up
with a fair and reasonable contract,” said
Dunlop. “CNCC is a first for Canada and
a shining example of how a large scale public-private
sector partnership can work to the benefit of
its employees and the community.”
Approximately 300 new jobs were created when
CNCC was opened in November 2001. More than $20
million – 70 percent of the facility’s
annual budget – is spent locally each year
at car dealerships, restaurants, clothing stores
and other small businesses.
“CNCC is a valued corporate citizen that
has continuously contributed to the local economy
since day one,” said Dunlop. “I wish
the employees well as they continue their fine
and difficult work under their first contract.”
