DUNLOP DISAPPOINTED THAT
SITE 41 NEGLECTED IN NEW LEGISLATION
For Immediate Release
April 5, 2004 (Queen’s Park) –
Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop today criticized
new legislation announced by Environment Minister
Leona Dombrowsky that would, if passed, prohibit
Adams Mine from ever being used as a landfill.
Adams Mine is located in the riding of Timiskaming-Cochrane
held by Liberal David Ramsay.
“This legislation is all about Liberals
helping Liberals and nothing more,” said
Dunlop. “Let’s not forget that David
Ramsay threatened to resign last fall if he didn’t
get his way on the Adams Mine landfill.”
The Adams Mine Lake Act, 2004 would amend the
Environmental Protection Act to prevent the use
of lakes greater than one hectare in area as landfill
sites.
“The new bill doesn’t do anything
to stop landfills like Site 41 in my riding,”
said Dunlop. “This would have been a perfect
opportunity for the Minister – who represents
all Ontarians – to announce a blanket solution
to resolve all landfill issues, such as a moratorium.”
Dunlop has challenged the decision to grant a
Certificate of Approval to the County of Simcoe
for Site 41 under the Environmental Bill of Rights.
The decision on whether or not to grant the review
will be rendered by the Minister of the Environment
by the end of April. With Minister Dombrowsky’s
announcement today and her passion for clean water,
Dunlop fully expects the Minister to approve his
request for this review.
