DUNLOP ANNOUNCES MARKETING
SUPPORT FOR POKER RUN
July 23, 2002
Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop today announced
that the Ontario government has contributed $12,000
to help promote the 16th Annual Poker Run in Penetanguishene.
The funding comes from the Ministry of Tourism
and Recreation's Tourism Event Marketing Partnership
(TEMP) program.
"Our government is once again proud to sponsor
this unique event for boating enthusiasts,"
said Dunlop. "We provided funding this year
to help organizers market the Poker Run throughout
Canada and the U.S. to encourage increased participation.
More people attending this event means greater
economic benefits for the communities involved."
The Penetanguishene Poker Run will be held July
26-28. Starting in Penetanguishene, powerboat
owners will boat their way through and dock at
Midland, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood and Meaford.
At each dock, participants will select a playing
card to form the best possible poker hand. Organizers
have created partnerships with the four towns
to ensure that participants receive required services.
"Events like the Poker Run give us the opportunity
to showcase our beautiful tourist attractions
to people from the community and beyond,"
said Dunlop. "As each year passes, this event
gets bigger and better, and our government is
pleased to contribute to its growth."
Midways, street parties, displays, helicopter
rides, live entertainment and fireworks will all
be part of the Poker Run festivities, generating
economic benefits to the area of an estimated
$1.9 million.
