Latest Liberal flip on Hydro
October 24, 2002
All Liberals present in the Legislature today
voted in favour of an NDP resolution that said,
"the Government of Ontario should return
to a system of power that is publicly owned and
regulated."
"If we could harness the energy that Ontario
Liberals use flipping on Hydro issues, we could
probably power a small town," said Garfield
Dunlop, the Conservative member for Simcoe North.
Dunlop added, "At least we know where Howard
Hampton stands. Though the Eves government disagrees
with the NDP?s position, they have stood consistently
on one side of this issue."
Dunlop said, "What happened today in the
Legislature was totally amazing! It shows the
complete lack of Liberal credibility. Unbelievably,
there was yet another flip in their position on
the opening of the electricity market."
On December 12, 2001 Dalton McGuinty told reporters,
?I think that it?s important that we move ahead
with competition both in terms of generation and
in terms of the transmission (of electricity).?
As of today, the Liberal Party website states,
"We support a genuinely competitive marketplace
for the generation of electricity... by this,
we mean a marketplace in which there will be several
generators of electricity---public and private?"
"This is a joke," said Dunlop, "How
can anybody take them seriously, when their leader
is saying one thing and his members vote in a
different way? What is the Liberal Party's real
position on electricity?"
