MPP DUNLOP NAMED HONORARY MEMBER OPPVA
(Orillia) – Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop has been named an Honorary Member of the Ontario Provincial Police Veterans’ Association. (OPPVA)
“I am honoured to have been given this special recognition by the OPPVA,” said Dunlop. “As the P.C. Critic for Community Safety and Correctional Services, I enjoy the challenge of holding the McGuinty government accountable to the people of Ontario, for their plans and actions for such important services as policing, firefighting, and the operation of our province's jails,” Dunlop added.
The OPPVA is dedicated to the well being of active, former or retired OPP, Auxiliary and Civilian members and their families and other agencies. There are twenty-three Chapters and over 1,300 members across the province. The distinction of Honorary Member is presented to those who have given of themselves for the well being of the community through support and fundraising endeavours which enhance policing. Dunlop joins a prestigious list of previous Honorary members which includes Steve Walsh, Walter Gretzky, Major-General (Ret´d) Richard Rohmer and Lincoln Alexander, the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
Dunlop credits members of the OPP for helping in the preparation of two Private Members Bills he initiated and followed through to completion: Bill 105, an amendment to the Health Protection and Promotion Act, which allows the local medical officer of health to order a blood sample from someone who accidentally or deliberately exposes a front-line emergency service worker, victim of crime or Good Samaritan to his or her bodily fluids so the blood can be tested for serious communicable diseases - effective May 1, 2003 and Bill 131 which provides for the implementation of an ignition interlock program for persons who violate drinking and driving laws - proclaimed Dec. 23, 2001. He also looks forward to their support as he proceeds with his private member’s Bill 84. The bill would amend the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA) for the protection of children exposed to the production of any and all illegal drugs defined in Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Dunlop was recognized as an Honorary Member at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Provincial Police Veterans’ Association hosted by Chapter 18 in Orillia.
