MPP DUNLOP URGES MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION
MIDLAND TORNADO DISASTER RELIEF NEEDED NOW

Midland:  Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop is urging the McGuinty Government to provide funding through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program, as soon as possible, to assist the Town of Midland and residents hit hard by last night’s Tornado.

Dunlop was in Midland last night minutes after the tornado struck, when he had the opportunity to speak to residents. He saw the damage first hand and is back on the scene this morning.

“While I appreciate that the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, the Hon Rick Bartolucci, plans a visit to Midland this morning, he needs to step up and take action. He needs to provide whatever  relief is necessary for the residents of Midland and help the victims of this terrible disaster get their lives back in order,” said Dunlop.

“I hope this is not just another one of the McGuinty Liberals visiting tour and photo ops. Midland needs the Liberal Government to provide assistance immediately to help the victims of this terrible disaster get their lives back in order,” added Dunlop. “The Liberal Government must react as quickly as they did when provided relief for those affected by the Peterborough Flood in 2004.”

Midland was hit by the tornado just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. There were reports of numerous downed power lines, gas leaks, overturned vehicles and damaged houses and businesses throughout the area.

“It’s fortunate that no one was seriously injured,” said Dunlop “The major problem is getting the hydro back on, and then assessing the damage at some of these homes and businesses, “he noted.
