MPP DUNLOP UPBEAT ABOUT THE FUTURE
As we embark on this new year of 2009 I think it is important that we think positively!
If we look at the media today, national television and print companies you would think the world is falling apart. The reporting is all doom and gloom. There is no doubt our economy is in a slump with job losses and slower times for businesses, but we have to remember that there is probably no better place to be than where we are. Here in Ontario and Canada, we are in a better position than most jurisdictions to weather the current economic storm.
Now is the time also for construction projects that will make a difference. In our area for example the redevelopment of the mental health centre in Penetanguishene, worth 300-million dollars, the 60-million dollar Health Sciences Centre at Georgian College and the 250-million dollar regional cancer centre coming to Royal Victoria Hospital will not only create local construction jobs, but will ensure when we do emerge from difficult economic times, that new jobs and infrastructure will have been created. I would also like to see this area benefit from the federal Building Canada Fund, with some going to infrastructure related to the construction of the new Lakehead University Campus in Orillia.
As we focus on the future it’s the ideal time for all levels of Government, municipal, provincial and federal, to work together to lessen the impact on deficits and set budgets that will have a positive impact on our future. We especially need to ensure that we lessen the impact of difficult economic times on our small businesses, which include agriculture and tourism.
I welcome everyone to take part in my pre-budget consultations. The Midland Pre-Budget Consultation is set for Monday February 2, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Brooklea Golf and Country Club, and the Orillia Pre-Budget Consultation is Wednesday February 4th 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Highwayman Inn. If you wish to make a presentation at either of the Pre-Budget sessions please contact Mary at my Orillia office 705-326-3246 or 1-800-304-7341.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year to everyone.
