MPP Dunlop: Canada Day and the HST

As we celebrate Canada Day on July 1, we can also recognize it as McGuinty’s Tax Grab Day! There will be an extra 8% added to our daily spending, from now on as a result of the largest tax hike in Ontario’s history imposed by the McGuinty Liberals.

Today while other jurisdictions around the world are introducing bold new ideas to recover from the recession and create jobs, we see the tired, out-of-gas McGuinty government continue with the same high taxes and reckless spending that failed to prevent or prepare us for hard times in the first place. Does the Premier not realize the impact this is going to endure on the wallets of hard working Ontarians?

This new tax hike will increase the cost of common expenditures like household electricity, gas, internet access and even funeral services.

Seniors and low income earners will be especially hard hit and simply cannot afford the additional costs. I am concerned that the extra tax burden will mean the Underground Economy will also flourish as citizens look to pay cash to avoid the 13 per cent tax hit.

The tourism industry and small businesses have indicated that increased taxes will affect their bottom line and translate into layoffs and fewer jobs for students desperate to cover increased tuition costs.

On Thursday July 1, our country celebrates its 143rd Birthday; I hope that despite the shadow cast with it being McGuinty’s Tax Grab Day that everyone will take part in a Canada Day celebration. My wife Jane and I look forward once again to participating in parades in Washago, Orillia, Midland and Bayshore Village. We also attend other Canada Day events at Horseshoe Valley, Hawkestone and Penetanguishene.

Although we have been experiencing some tough economic times, I feel we should always remember the good things about Canada. We should also take time to think about those men and women who are serving in military roles around the world.

I also hope you enjoy the summer months with vacations, family get togethers, BBQ’s and celebrations across the country.  One such event is my Annual Constituency Barbecue and Family Picnic which is being held on July 10th, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Coldwater Curling Club. It is a chance to say hello, share great food, entertainment and company. I look forward to seeing you there!
