“Waste Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008”
On March 17, 2008, Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop introduced his Private Member’s Bill, “Waste Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008” for first reading in the Ontario Legislature.
The following are the comments made in the legislature by MPP Dunlop following the introduction and first reading of the bill:
Thank you Mr. Speaker.
At any given time, the Ministry of the Environment may issue a water taking permit for the County of Simcoe Landfill Site 41 in the Township of Tiny. The permit would allow approximately 250 million litres of clean fresh water per year to be pumped from the site so that the site can be dewatered to permit the construction of a landfill.
My Private Member’s Bill, “Waste Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008” parallels Bill 49, “The Adams Mine Lake Act,” that this house passed in the previous parliament.
Mr. Speaker, the horrible tragedy of Walkerton and the recommendations of Justice Dennis O’Connor of the Walkerton inquiry should have taught all Ontarians and the Ministry of the Environment lessons that we cannot ignore.
I would appreciate the support of all members of this house as this bill proceeds.
“I am pleased to reintroduce my Private Member’s Bill, “Waste Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008,” said Dunlop. “I challenge the Minister of the Environment, The Hon. John Gerretsen to seriously consider the content of this bill before issuing the Water Taking Permit to the County of Simcoe for Site 41.”
