Tiny Ties NEWS - September 2009 (Labour Day Issue)

Queen’s Park Report

It is sure hard to believe that Labour Day weekend is upon us and the summer of 2009 has once again been a busy time in my riding. I would like to take this opportunity to update the readers of the Tiny Ties Newspaper about a few of the activities I have been involved in.

To begin with, I would like to thank all of those who participated in my 9th Annual Constituency Barbecue and Family Picnic held at the Coldwater Curling Club on July 11. Over 800 people attended the event and were treated to good food and entertainment. Thank you so much to those who attended and made the day such a great success!

The Leader of the Official Opposition Tim Hudak (MPP Niagara West - Glanbrook) recently announced the appointment of his shadow cabinet and I am truly honoured to have been named to the team.

My reappointment as Critic of Community Safety and Correctional Services makes perfect sense with OPP Headquarters in my riding. We have one of the largest correctional facilities in the province, the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene, which I work with as well.  I also continue to foster a good relationship with area police and fire departments and paramedics.

I have also been named Chair of the Standing Committee on Estimates, which reviews and oversees spending of all provincial government ministries. Under Dalton McGuinty, Ontario’s taxes and government waste have hit new heights. Being able to review the spending of all ministries from previous years and carefully reviewing planned spending for coming years will be key in turning the economy around. Under McGuinty’s watch, Ontario has lost 330,000 manufacturing jobs, became a have-not province, and has a record $18.5 billion provincial deficit.

The provincial legislature will resume sitting on September 14th. Without question the provincial economy will be one of the main focuses of Question Period and debates.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to my Annual Day for Seniors. The Midland Senior’s Day takes place October 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Highland Inn, at King Street and Highway 12. This information day will feature informative exhibits, guest speakers, complimentary lunch and refreshments. Hope to see you there!
