MPP DUNLOP: SECOND READING OF SITE 41 LEGISLATION PASSES

The provincial legislature has passed second reading of my private member’s bill, Bill 32, Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008. The House voted 40 to11 to approve second reading of the bill, on November 19th.

I am very pleased with the support shown by all three parties in the legislature however, there is much more that needs to be done. Our challenge now is to get the bill through the Standing Committee on Justice Policy and onto third reading.

The purpose of the bill is to remove and revoke all provincial approvals at Site 41, also known as the North Simcoe Landfill. The bill is similar to that of the Adams Mine Lake Act that prohibits a landfill from being placed on the Adams Mine in Kirkland Lake.

We are all going to continue to fight to ensure that the province revokes the Certificate of Approval and that is up to the McGuinty government.

I feel most positive because other members -- including Liberals -- kept coming up to me in advance of the vote on my bill, saying they couldn't believe the number of e-mails and phone calls they were getting. I have told them we're never going to stop and that there's never going to be a landfill at Site 41.

I want to thank all the people who have taken the time and effort to support me on this, especially the nearly 100 Site 41 opponents who packed the public galleries for the debate on the bill.

From here the bill will go back to the Ontario standing committee on justice policy, which will determine when it returns to the legislature for third and final reading.
