MPP DUNLOP – Invitation to Premier to Visit Site 41

Dear Premier McGuinty:

I am writing to you to-day to extend to you an invitation to visit the site of the proposed County of Simcoe landfill, namely Site 41, located in the township of Tiny, just 4 km southeast of the community of Wyevale.

In particular, Mr. Premier, I would like you to see with your own eyes the high volume of cold clear water that spews from a test well on the site when the sealed cap on the well is removed. I witnessed this myself, post Walkerton, and am confident that if you were to visit the site, the County of Simcoe would conveniently arrange to remove the cap for you to witness. Nearby well water has recently been tested at the state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Heidleberg and the test have indicated that the water from these wells may in fact be as clean and clear as any water found on our planet.

You can understand the frustration and disappointment from the tens of thousands of North Simcoe residents opposing the landfill, when just days before committee hearings were to proceed on Bill 43, The Clean Water Act, the Minister, Ms. Broten, gave final approval to the design of the landfill. I thought that Walkerton and Justice Dennis O’Connor’s report would have changed the manner in which we handle our household waste adjacent to precious and pristine groundwater.

I personally have read thousands of signatures on petitions into the record at Queen’s Park, have introduced a Private Member’s bill that parallels the Adam’s Mine Lake Act, have asked for a review of the application under the Environmental Bill of Rights, and have spoken as recently as the Third Reading of Bill 43, The Clean Water Act, on the problems associated with placing a landfill over some of the most pristine water on the earth.

I simply could not support Bill 43, primarily because of the Site 41 design approval.

Premier, we need you to intervene. I ask you to visit the site. Judge for yourself whether you really believe that Site 41 is a suitable location for a landfill.

Once you see the site, I am confident that you will agree that with hundreds of millions of people in the world that do not have access to drinking water, it is probably a really bad idea to place a landfill at Site 41.

I look forward to your response and to your visit at your convenience, to Site 41.

Sincerely,

Garfield Dunlop, MPP Simcoe North
