MPP DUNLOP: CELEBRATE CANADA DAY

On Tuesday July 1, our country will celebrate its 141st Birthday.

In my nine years as MPP for Simcoe North, I have found that Canada Day and the few days leading up to it is the busiest time of the year.

This year Jane and I will participate in parades in Victoria Harbour, Washago, Orillia, Midland and Bayshore Village.
We will also attend other Canada Day events in Horseshoe Valley, Hillsdale and Lafontaine. It is always special to visit the diverse communities we have across Simcoe North and to see the pride that we as Canadians have in our country. Most of the world considers Canada to be the number one nation in the world and we have achieved that status because we are known for our history of tolerance and for welcoming people and their cultures. Although we as Canadians are often the first to complain about problems that we have in Canada, we should always remember that the good things about Canada far exceed anything that is negative.

This year, I am pleased that our offices organized our First Annual Canada Day Poster Contest. The contest was open to all schools in the riding of Simcoe North. I was thankful that the Huronia Foundation for the Arts acted as jurors to select the winning poster.

The winning contestant was Rachel Mochulla, a grade 5 student at Monsignor Lee School in Orillia.

I have printed hundreds of copies of Rachel’s poster and they have been distributed to stores and institutions across Simcoe North to promote Canada Day.

In summary, I hope that everyone is able to take part in a Canada Day celebration somewhere this year. On Canada Day be especially proud of being a Canadian and what we represent.
